History

We forget history at our peril. (Octavia E. Butler A Few Rules for Predicting Our Future [2000])

What one has to learn is how to remember and yet be free of the past. How to be there with the dead and yet still be here, on the spot, with the living. (Aldous Huxley Island [1962])

The “Deutscher Anglistikverband” (German Association for the Study of English) was registered as an association at the Giessen District Court on 5 October 1977, at that time still under the name “Anglistentag – Verband deutscher Anglisten”. On 29 September 1998, the association was renamed “Deutscher Anglistenverband”. The association’s origins date back to 1958. In the 1960s and 1970s, informal meetings were held between Professors of English [Chairs).Among other things, these meetings served to strategically develop English Studies at German Universities. This period also saw major student protests; in 1969 the meeting in Cologne was disrupted to such an extent that no “Anglistentag” was held the following year. The “Anglistikverband” is committed to reflecting on its own history, documenting its past conscientiously. The archive is still under construction, and we are grateful to receive any documents in private hands that provide information about the history of the association.
